Depression & Young People Depression is a serious mental health condition that can affect how children and young people think, feel and interact with the world around them. While occasional sadness and mood changes are a normal part of growing up, depression is more persistent and can significantly impact a young person’s relationships, school engagement and overall wellbeing. Recognising the signs of depression can sometimes be challenging, particularly during adolescence when emotional and behavioural changes are common. Academic pressures, friendship difficulties, social media and challenges around identity and belonging can all contribute to emotional distress. Understanding the warning signs and knowing when to seek help are important steps in ensuring young people receive the support they need. This edition of SchoolTV explores the signs and causes of depression, offering practical guidance and strategies to help recognise concerns early and provide appropriate support. 🚀 Future Careers. Big Ideas. Powerful Connections! 🤖✨ Four of our incredible Year 10 students stepped outside the classroom and into the world of innovation at the Women Leading AI Conference, led by the amazing Amanda Rose from Western Sydney Women. 💜 With career aspirations spanning Electrotechnology, Travel and Tourism, and Diesel Mechanics, our students discovered that AI is transforming every industry, and our students were ready to learn, connect and be inspired! 🌟 The conference theme "Connect. Scale. Grow. " was brought to life through inspiring conversations with AI leaders from across a range of industries. And our students didn’t just listen… they networked! 🙌 They confidently introduced themselves, asked questions, made connections and took every opportunity to engage with dynamic and influential leaders. 👏 We are SO proud of their networking skills, confidence and willingness to step outside their comfort zones. Who knows where those new connections might lead? 🌏💡 This is what career learning looks like at CathWest — connecting our students with industry, inspiring possibilities and building the skills to thrive in the future of work. 💙 Interested in starting a career pathway while completing your HSC? Huge congratulations to all the incredible nominees and winners at the Schools Industry Partnership Annual Awards! 🎉 Gathering at St Mary’s Leagues Club on September 1st, we celebrated the standout students who made a serious impression during their workplace placements this year. Nominated directly by their host employers, these students proved that the future of our workforce is in great hands. A special highlight of the event was having Penrith Mayor Todd Carney and Karen McKeown MP present the awards to our deserving recipients, recognising their hard work and dedication alongside the community. Protecting children is everyone’s business. 💙 Child Protection Week is a reminder that looking out for the young people in our lives isn't just up to parents—it's a shared community effort. Every child deserves to grow up safe, supported, and heard. Thriving kids build thriving communities, and even the smallest action makes a difference. You can help create a safer environment today by: Checking in: Reach out to a family member, neighbour, or friend who might need a helping hand. Listening closely: Give the children in your life your full attention and validate their feelings. Speaking up: Learn the signs of harm and know where to seek help if something doesn't feel right. Getting involved: Support local youth initiatives, schools, or community groups. What’s one small action you can take this week to support a child or family in your community? #ChildProtectionWeek #EveryChildEveryCommunity #ItTakesAVillage #ChildSafety #communitysupport
